Today marks a significant day for Nvidia as the RTX 4070 Super hits the shelves, but AMD is not sitting idly. In a strategic move, AMD has slashed the price of its RX 7900 XT, one of its top graphics cards in this generation, to counter Nvidia's big release. Is it a coincidence? Not likely. The question now arises – will this price cut be enough when Nvidia introduces the RTX 4070 Ti Super?
The RX 7900 XT, now priced at $750 (some models even as low as $710), initially launched at $900. It never quite outshone AMD's other flagship, the RX 7900 XTX, priced just $100 higher, which offered significantly better performance. As a result, the RX 7900 XT became somewhat overlooked in AMD's lineup. Over the last year, its price steadily dropped from $900 to close to $700. At around $710, it presents a competitive alternative to the new RTX 4070 Super, surpassing it at every resolution, though Nvidia's DLSS 3 and ray tracing introduce a game-changing factor.
Running Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra settings at 4K with ray tracing and DLSS 3 enabled, the RTX 4070 Super produced 77.5 fps, while the RX 7900 XT averaged 18 fps. However, this showcases the power of Nvidia's DLSS 3 rather than the new GPU itself.
Looking ahead, when the RTX 4070 Ti Super hits the market with similar specs and an $800 price tag, AMD may face tougher competition. Expected to perform at the level of the RTX 4080 (non-Super), it could outperform the RX 7900 XT in all scenarios, leaving the latter in an awkward market position – not cheap enough to be a steal and not powerful enough to be a must-have.
For those not interested in DLSS 3, the current deals on the RX 7900 XT are appealing, providing savings of $50 to $100 compared to the upcoming RTX 4070 Ti Super. However, it's worth noting that this AMD price cut might be a seasonal promotion, not a permanent reduction, so potential buyers are advised to act swiftly before AMD changes its pricing strategy.
