Today marks the release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PlayStation 5, delivering the most current version of the award-winning 2020 title to fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise.
Despite some grumbles about Naughty Dog producing a slew of remasters (2013's The Last of Us already has three), reviews for Part II Remastered are largely positive, hailing it as the pinnacle of the series, at least from a technical standpoint. In this latest iteration, players can unlock and equip various in-game skins for the main characters, Ellie and Abby.
While the game pays homage to sentimental scenes from the series, many of these nods are representations of other PlayStation games. One particular reference, however, has stirred up feelings of melancholy and nostalgia.
It Has Been 11 Years
Among the outfits available for Ellie in The Last of Us Part II Remastered, there's a t-shirt adorned with a Killzone icon. This marks a poignant moment, arguably the first time in over a decade that any PlayStation-centric studio has acknowledged the franchise. For long-time fans still holding onto hope for a new title in the series, this reference packs an emotional punch.
Killzone once stood poised to be a dominant shooter, rivalling sci-fi heavyweights like Halo with its next-gen gunplay, immersive storyline, and a completely new universe rich in lore and ingenuity. The franchise debuted on the PlayStation 2, saw two releases on the PlayStation 3, and concluded with a final iteration on the PlayStation 4 in 2013.
Between these main releases, Killzone also made appearances on the PSP and the PS Vita. Developed by Guerrilla, the studio shifted its focus to Horizon: Zero Dawn after 2013's Killzone Shadowfall, taking its developmental direction in an entirely different trajectory.
The loss of Killzone and its disappearance from storefronts worldwide remains a point of mourning for many. While Killzone Shadowfall didn't reach monumental heights, it offered a visually stunning experience, a lengthy campaign, and a passable multiplayer platform. It faced tough competition from titles like Battlefield 4, COD Ghosts, and Halo 4.
Now, the closest nod to the long-forgotten Killzone franchise comes in the form of a t-shirt within a remake of a 2020 game developed by an entirely different studio. A poignant reminder of what once was for fans who still harbor affection for the iconic shooter series.
